Our Curriculum

Serangoon Junior College offers the Singapore-Cambridge GCE (Advanced Level) Examination, conducted by the Singapore Ministry of Education, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board.

A student may offer the following subjects during his/her course of study:

  • 3 H2 + 1 H1 content subjects or 4 H2 content subjects
  • 3 H1 subjects (General Paper, Project Work and Mother Tongue Language)
  • H3 level subjects will be offered to eligible students at the end of year 1

Of the 3 H2 content subjects and 1 H1 content subject, one must be a contrasting subject. Students may offer an additional H2 content subject in place of the H1 content subject, if they meet the college criteria.

students_in_lab.jpgAll students must offer General Paper, Project Work and Mother Tongue Language as H1 subjects. Students may be exempted from offering H1 Mother Tongue Language if  they have obtained at least a D7 in their Higher Mother Tongue Language at the GCE 'O' Level Examination. Approval must be obtained from the Mother Tongue Languages Department.

Subject Combinations 2017

1.Students are required to take General Paper (GP), Project Work (PW) and Mother Tongue Language (MTL) at H1 level. Students are also required to offer 3 H2 and 1 H1 content-based subjects, at least one of which must be from a contrasting discipline.
2.Alternatively, students can choose to offer 4 H2 subjects, of which at least 1 must be from a contrasting discipline, if they have met the subject combination requirements.
3.In order to be exempted from H1 MTL, students are required to obtain at least a D7 for Higher Mother Tongue Language at GCE 'O' Level. Students who offer Mother Tongue Language B (MTLB) at GCE 'O' Level will continue with MTLB at GCE ‘A’ Level.
4.In choosing your subject combination, it is critical that you consider the course you would like to pursue in university and its pre-requisites. It is also useful to take your passion and aptitude into consideration.

Notes for 3 H2 + 1H1 Subject Combinations

1.Humanities refer to Economics, Geography, History and Literature in English (from the English Department). 
Sciences refer to Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
2.Students can choose to offer Mother Tongue Language and Literature in Chinese, Malay or Tamil.
3.Students who wish to offer H2 Art can replace 1 H2 subject with H2 Art (only applicable for subject combinations that do not consist Further Mathematics) 
 4.Students who choose a Further Mathematics subject combination must indicate a non- Further Mathematics subject combination as one of their 3 choices during subject combination registration.
 5.Students who wish to offer 2 Science subjects at H2 level should have offered at least one of these subjects as a Pure Science subject at GCE ‘O’ Level. 
 6.Students who wish to offer courses S/N 9 to 16 but have missed the pre-requisite for only one of the Science subjects by one GCE ‘O’ Level grade would have to sit for a qualifying test for the relevant subject.
 7. Subject combinations will only be offered if there are sufficient students.
8.In the event that a subject is over-subscribed, students' relative performances in the relevant subjects at the GCE 'O' Level would be considered.
 9. Students who perform well at the JC1 Promotional Examination may be offered to take up a H3 subject.

Notes for 4 H2 Subject Combinations

1.Students may offer MCPE & MCBE if they obtained an L1R5 raw score of 13 or better and have obtained a score of A1 – A2 for the relevant ‘O’ Level Pure Science subjects, Additional Mathematics and Mathematics.
2.Students may offer MFCE & MFPE if they obtained an L1R5 raw score of 13 or better and have obtained a score of A1 – A2 for the relevant ‘O’ Level Pure Science subjects and A1 for both Additional Mathematics and Mathematics.

Students who are keen to offer Further Mathematics at SRJC must attend a compulsory briefing by the HOD/Mathematics and sit for  a qualifying test during Orientation.
Students who do not attend the briefing would not be considered for any combination involving Further Mathematics.
Art (A) H2 Students who are keen to offer Art at SRJC are to sit for a diagnostic test and an interview during Orientation.
Students are to submit a portfolio when they come in for the diagnostic test and interview.
